Inspiration from Naturfönster’s glazed windows and doors
The history of glazing bars
Glazing bars started to appear on windows in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Back then, glass in large sizes or ‘panes’ was very difficult to make and also very expensive. To maximize the size of a window, glass was divided into smaller pieces, with wooden divisions in between, i.e. glazing bars.
glazing bars held smaller panes of glass in place, this allowed large sliding windows to be made from small panes held together with bars. glazing bars were widely used throughout the Georgian period and up to the Victorian period, and today it is very popular. Around half of Sweden’s windows have glazing bars.
Barred windows
In the early 1900s when many windows were either replaced or an extra glass was put in, the glazing bars also came to the rescue, even corner braces helped to support the windows. The thin window arches could not hold up the weight of an extra glass, which is why the division and support of bars came to the rescue and became common
Making large panes of glass is no longer as difficult or as expensive as it was. In fact, it is the opposite today and it is now more expensive to make sliding windows with smaller glass units and glass bars to separate panes, therefore glazing bars cost extra, the more genuine the bars are the higher the price.
Window bars
Naturfönster has real glass dividing bars, Allmogesperöjs, Wienerspröjs where there is one pane of glass but with the help of glass spacers you make them look like several, it is wooden outside and inside in real wood. Then Naturfönster also has aluminum bars between glass and surface-mounted removable bars.
For us, glazing bars today are just a beautiful decoration that has nothing to do with the actual function of the window, but this has not historically been the case. At Naturfönster, you can also get coupled windows with real glass dividing bars and casements. We are one of the few suppliers to have this in our range.

Glazing bars Windows
Windows with glazing bars: Should you choose 3 panes when buying new windows? Or is 2 glasses good enough on mullioned windows?

coupled-fonsters-21-with-props
The answer is that it depends on the house you are buying windows for. For your home, the house where you live all year round, you should choose 3 types of glass. Both for energy savings, comfort and not least for sound insulation.
You should also bear in mind that energy costs will not be lower in the future. You should future-proof your windows, and you do this with Naturs windows and doors. If you are going to live in the house all year round, you need 3 glass windows for a comfortable indoor climate. 2 glass windows are best suited to summer houses, garages and storage rooms.
Naturs 2 glass windows have a good gap between the glass for better insulation, and we fill the glass with argon gas. Argon makes it harder for the cold to migrate from outside and through the glass package into your house.
Natur also coats the outer glass with a thin metal film, a so-called low-emission surface that helps the sun’s light and rays to pass through the glass, but makes it difficult for the room heat to radiate through the glass.
Naturs 2 glass windows with energy glass
That’s why Natur’s 2-glazed windows with energy glass are better insulated than 3-glazed windows were just a few years ago.
The same applies to our 3 glass windows, they also have low emission glass and argon between the glasses. If you install Natur’s energy windows, you should also review your ventilation in the house.
This is because our windows provide such good insulation that no air can slip through as it did in your old windows. This air leakage provided ventilation to the house and if you don’t have additional vents in the house, you should install them when you switch to our windows and doors.
Add a vent to your new Naturfönster windows. Good ventilation together with good windows is important for your well-being and for keeping your energy costs low. A very good option is to add Natur’s gap valve to the windows. We then install an extra vent in the window to provide fresh air and keep you and your house healthy.

Transoms began to be used in the 17th century because glass at that time was so thin and fragile that it was simply not possible to make large windows with one-piece glass. The glass would crack.
Transoms began to be used to stabilize the window frame and then to make the glass in larger windows last. For hundreds of years, windows were made according to this craft model and houses that were built almost always had glazing bars.
Transoms thus became an important part of our building history and cultural heritage in construction. Today, flat glass production can make very large glass with a variety of properties, but glazing bars that have become an important part of our cultural heritage in construction are included in order for us to manufacture contemporary windows for older houses.
Even modern houses largely have glazing bars, to give the house a distinctive and personal look.
